How To Prepare For Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding will cement the bond between you and your child. Right now is the time you can begin preparing yourself for the upcoming new adventure.

You can start by locating in your home a special, quiet place for you and your baby to share. This could be in the nursery, your room or the family room, it really doesn’t matter. What does matter, is that this place be a comfortable place for just the two of you. It doesn’t need to be fancy, but it does need to have room for a soft rocker or easy chair for you two to melt into. Next find a nursing pillow, or any soft pillow for your lap for the baby to rest on. This will give support to your back and arms. Next you will need at least two each of nursing bras, shirts, and nighties that open down the front.

Now you can sit back and relax. At this point you are well on your way to an enjoyable breastfeeding experience. It’s not time to worry about any, “old wives tales” you may have heard such as, women with small breast can not give enough milk. It’s not true! And, please never think you will spoil your new baby if you nurse it too often. In fact you can nurse it every two hours, those first fewd ays. Remember, if your baby is going through at least six diapers a day it’s getting enough to eat.

If you are fortunate enough to have your mom, sister or close friend offer to help you through thosefirst few days, take them up on the offer! A little help could mean more time for you and you baby to get to know one and other better.

So there you have it. You are prepared for the breastfeeding experience. Sit down put your feet up,and read a book. Not just any book. There are many good ones for new nursing mothers, the ones I recommend are, The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, by The La Leche League International, and Breastfeeding For Dummies, which takes you through all the steps from the first time to weaning.

What it all boils down to is this: Now is the time to relax, take a deep breath, as you and your newbaby are about to enjoy the wonderful experience of breastfeeding.
